Candle Wicks

If your going to make candles then choosing the right candle wicks for your candles is a must, whether the candles are made from soy wax, beeswax, paraffin, or even the oil candles. The performance of your candles depends greatly on the type of wick you are using. No one wick will work for every type of wax and the size of the candlewick is very important for the candle to burn properly.

How do candle wicks burn? Candlewicks are naturally absorbent and burn by absorbing the liquid wax as the candle burns. The flame turns the liquid wax into a vapor that burns, but the liquid wax that forms as the candle burns helps keep the rest of the wicking cool so it doesn't burn up all in one go.

When choosing the right wick for your candles there are a few important criteria to consider. One should always strive to get keep a moderate temperature in the container, to get a consistent sized flame, to try to make sure that there is little or no blooming, and that there is little or no glow once the candle has been extinguished. As there are different types of candle wax, or oil, there are different types of wicking to suit each candle-making medium. As different candles need different types of holders, so they also need different kinds of candlewicks to work properly. Candle wicking is available in assorted bulk packages from wholesale places that sell candle-making supplies.

Many times you will see a very large candles that has 3 or more wicks in them. This is because the candle itself is large enough that one wick would not be able to burn with the candle properly. So, more candlewicks are added to ensure even burning. One can find a holder for candles this size, but they aren't really necessary.

If you are making rolled beeswax candles then the basic wicking is fine to use for these types of candles. You can make scented wicks for rolled beeswax candles by treating an untreated candlewick by dipping it in scented wax. The scent will be releases as the candle burns.

If you'd rather just buy your candles already made, and are looking for all natural candles made with naturally pure scents then Blue Wick soy candles have become a popular choice since their opening in 1994. It's definitely worth taking a look at their website online.

Whether you make your own candles, or buy them, try to make sure that the candle is well made. A well-made candle will have the proper wick, or wicks, for it's size. And, with a proper wick, your candle will give hours, days, or even weeks of burning pleasure.
