Incense Making

Making your own incense and making your own incense burners can a really fun hobby that can last for a lifetime, and can also be a very be a profitable home-based business.

There are many sites on the internet that can tell you how to make the various forms of incense, whether it be cone incense, stick incense, and loose incense, or "pellet" incense; which is the easiest of the types to make, but does require a few more items for burning than either the cone incense or the stick incense.

Making incense sticks, or incense cones, is rather messy, and a bit more difficult than making loose, or "pellet' incense, but it is self-burning and requires no charcoal.

To make incense you will need these items; an incense burner, mortal and pestle, or a coffee grinder, 2 mixing bowls or food grade plastic baggies, measuring cup or spoons, or a gram scale, stirring spoon, distilled water or fragrant hydrosols, charcoal (bamboo or mica), tweezers, and the natural incense ingredients. These ingredients can be natural woods, herbs and resins. Look for a list of ingredients on any website devoted to the making of incenses, for the list of ingredients for making incense is long and varied, and the combinations nearly endless.

There are incense making starter kits available through shops and dealers specializing in incense, and incense making supplies.

Incense burners are a necessity for burning incense. These are very easy and inexpensive to make. A bowl, or saucer, cup, or any container of your choice can be filled with dirt, or sand, and will suffice nicely. If you prefer a more ornate holder, then try using an abalone seashell, or a wineglass. Or you can try using a wine bottle.

By using any type of bottle you want, and a dremel tool with some diamond tipped bits, you can make a smoking bottle incense burner. Here's how.

Choose the bottle you want to turn into an incense burner. Pick the area you want to drill the hole and tape it off with, preferable, clear packing, or painters, tape. Start drilling at an angle. SLOWLY round out the hole until it is about the size of a dime. Fix a clip with a weighted end, (alligator clips work very well for this), making sure that the weight is bigger than the hole so the whole shebang doesn’t fall into the hole. Attach a light stick of incense to the clip and slide it into the top of the bottle. Voila! A bottle incense burner!
